About Sights – Dzveli Shuamta Monastery
Dzveli (“old”) Shuamta Monastery is located in a small clearing in the middle of a deciduous forest on Tsivgombori Mountain near the city of Telavi in Kakheti region. The Monastery got its name because of its location – “Shuamta’’ means ‘among the mountains’.
Prior to their recent restoration, the churches were in a state of neglect.

The complex has one of the oldest churches in Georgia – a triple-nave basilica that dates back to the 5th century. Two other cross-domed churches on the site were built in the 7th century.

Dzveli Shuamta does not have any resident nuns or monks but there is an improvised altar with several icons inside the larger, domed church.
The monastery complex is located in the village of Shuamta, about 7 kilometers from the city of Telavi.
