About Sights – Rabati Castle – A Jewel in the Crown
The President of Georgia described the recently restored Rabati Castle as a “crown of restoration in Georgia”.
Built in the 13th century, Rabati castle developed under the influence of different cultures over subsequent centuries and this is reflected in its architecture. Within the 7 hectares castle complex there is a Church, a Mosque, a Minaret and a Synagogue.
In the 13th-16th centuries the castle and its town of Akhaltsikhe had been the residence of the Jakhely princes. During the following two centuries it was part of the Ottoman Empire and in 19th-20th centuries it became part of the Russian Empire.
In the Soviet period the closure of the border with Turkey isolated the town and resulted in the decline of its importance. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the changed geopolitical situation has given a new stimulus to the development of the town.
The restoration of the castle was undertaken over 15 months and its completion marked by a special concert by world famous French singer Charles Aznavour, whose father was born in Akhaltsikhe. Click here to find out more.

Entrance fee to the complex is GEL 7 (about USD 4). Local residents of Akhaltsikhe municipality are charged GEL 1. Click here for travel directions to Rabati castle.
President Saakashvili expects that Rabati Castle will become one of Georgia’s top tourist attractions.
We can see why!

I seriously need to visit Georgia some day!
Yes you do!
Another beautiful work of art. What a wonderful place it would be to visit. You can tell by the people that the structures are quiet large.and they cover a large space too don’t they? All of it is just beautiful! Hugs
How very interesting! Before we even started reading we were struck by all the different types of architecture! Great post! 🙂
I think that haveing a Church, a Mosque, a Minaret and a Synagogue in that one place all together is a great idea! President Saakashvili is very right, surely Rabati Castle will be a gorgeous attraction in Georgia! 🙂
OK I will check out the castles while I eat!
