Born in Tbilisi, Oskar Schmerling (Georgian: ოსკარ ივანეს ძე შმერლინგი) was a Georgian artist of German origin known for caricatures in Georgian newspapers and for illustrating Molla Nasraddin, a magazine of political satire published in Tiflis (from 1906 to 1917), Tabriz (in 1921) and Baku (from 1922 to 1931) in the Azeri and occasionally Russian languages. One of the founders of the Georgian cartoon genre, Schmerling produced works that captured the essence of Georgian culture and tradition.
