About Architecture – Lazika Pier Sculpture
Completed at the end of 2012, the Lazika Pier Sculpture was intended to mark the beginning of the development of a new city that was to be called Lazika (Georgian: ლაზიკა).

Designed by J. Mayer H. Architects the 31 meter high sculpture is located on Georgia’s Black Sea coast at the end of a one hundred meter long pier and is constructed of steel plates stacked in oval elements arranged in seven levels.

The proposed city of Lazika is named after the Greco-Roman designation for this part of Georgia but construction work has been halted and it remains uncertain if it will ever be built.

Why was construction halted and why is it not certain that the city will be built? Just curious!

Hi Nancy. The idea of developing the northern tip of the Georgian Black Sea coast was conceived by the then president Mikheil Saakashvili in 2006. Lazika was intended to be become the main trading and economic center in Western Georgia but construction was halted following the change in government.
