About Achievements – Georgian Boys Win Silver in Disney Tournament
Georgian youngsters flew to Florida U.S.A. in July and reached the Cup Final of the Disney International Youth Soccer Tournament.
Scoring 13 goals and finishing first in their group the boys played against a Brazilian team, Rivellino Sport Center, in a thrilling 6 goal Cup Final match.
Despite beating Rivellino in an earlier round, the Georgian boys were unable to overcome the boys from Brazil in a fiercely contested match and brought home the runners up trophy and silver medals.
This was a fantastic achievement. Well done boys!
This prestigious international tournament attracted teams from 19 countries and was very competitive.
The girls team missed out on a medal but played well and provided fantastic support to the boys – well done girls!
To win an opportunity to play in the Disney tournament the boys and girls had competed in the Rustavi2 Kids Cup against five thousand other young soccer players from all over Georgia.
Organized by Sport and Entertainment Games Association (SEGA), a non-governmental organisation set up and promoted by Georgia’s most popular TV channel Rustavi2 Broadcasting Company, the final deciding matches of the Rustavi2 Kids Cup took place on May 22 at Georgia’s National Stadium.
The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs of Georgia provided the main funding for this initiative, which also received support from the U.S. Embassy in Georgia. Ambassador John Bass attended the opening ceremonies, part of the day’s games, the finals, and the awards ceremony.
Georgia About thanks SEGA, Rustavi2 and the wonderful sponsors for giving young soccer players the opportunity to compete in the Rustavi2 Kids Cup and the Disney International Youth Soccer Tournament.
Team manager and coach Jano Zhvania told Georgia About:
“This has been a great year for the kids. I am so proud of our performance in Florida. We came home with a trophy and medals and had defeated the eventual winners in an earlier round. I am hoping that we can enter teams for next year’s Disney Cup and other international events, possibly in Europe.”
We hope so too Jano! We take this opportunity to thank you for your contribution to the amazing efforts of SEGA in connecting young people with sport – you are a champion!
